Through WordPlay, Helen puts fun into the learning of Communication, Language and Literacy skills for young children, bringing a colourful world of phonics, letters and words into their lives.

EVERY child deserves the best opportunities to develop their skills for life.
Making knowledge an enjoyable experience from an early age can bring about a huge difference to a child's attitude to future learning.

Thousands of children are starting secondary school barely able to read or write according to a Government report.

A massive 44% of 11 year olds are not at the required Level 4 when they leave primary school.

A child's early learning can have a big impact on their future development and their ability to interact with both children and adults.

Not every child has the capabilities of reaching these standards but giving them the best opportunity to reach their own potential is what WordPlay Home Sessions are all about.

Every child is different and every child matters - that's why WordPlay Home Sessions are individually tailored to your child's needs.

Parents of reception-class aged children usually express concern about their child's use of single letter or blended sounds, while those starting school may need to develop their general speech and language skills.

Whatever stage your child is at, WordPlay's Home Sessions are a quick but intensive method of improving their confidence and making a positive impact on their learning skills. You will be amazed at how much your child can learn in such a short space of time.

The sessions start with an assessment of your child's abilities and identify their favourite activities so these can be incorporated into a fun and enjoyable learning experience.

"Our son has completely changed his attitude to learning since he started coming to you. He has more confidence and tries harder." Linda, March 2010.

        EXAMPLES OF A TYPICAL SESSION:

All sessions are discussed with the parent but typically:

  • Introduce letter sounds through rhymes, poetry and story-books.

  • Use music and rhythm to explore the world of rhyme and poetry.

  • Let's pretend - becoming characters from stories and poems and using role-play to introduce new words and sounds.

  • Drawing or painting a picture of the characters and scenarios we have met in a story, or write about what has been talked about.

  • Questions and answers - throughout the session, the child is asked open and closed questions to develop their language skills.
